Ben and Jiddu

Passing Time in Pokhara

“What does your boyfriend want?” Miwa joked, well I assume she was joking. My sexual preference remains female orientated, but Miwa had a point though. Ben and I where spending every minute of everyday together and had been for a few weeks now.

It was time for our daily bread and jam. Ben just got back from our favourite but highly erratic baker. The freshest loaf we had had so far. Still hot, and hand cut in thick slices. We spread it with jam. Ben is excited “There is bread, toast, and hot bread. Hot bread bread is the best!” He takes a bite before he continues “I wish we were high right now, we’d have such good quotes about hot bread.”

We loved our own quotes. Well, each others quotes I should say. Another one:

“It’s great because it makes everything shitter. And the greater it becomes the shitter everything else becomes. Work, school, life, friends ect. I know I’m addicted to it. I’ve just never played it.” My words on World Of Warcraft.

Or “If I eat anymore I’ll be full” he pauses, “I’m good now.” That’s Ben, He had just eaten 4 jam bread slices, a mushroom risotto, and a mushroom burger with chips in the last 3 hours.

Most conversations were about food. In Pokhara the main travelers pastime is food. The meals are very western tasting and for many of long term travelers a welcome break from all the alien dishes. We also cooked our own English breakfasts everyday: two poached eggs, beans in tomato sauce, red onion with fried tomato, and toast. We thought to call it Breakfast of Champions, but decided that title had to be handed to Daal Bhat. Daal Bhat is the national meal that locals eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Instead we titled English breakfast ‘breakfast of those who really like tasty breakfast’.

It must sound like our time in Pokhara was not spend very substantial. Discussing mostly lighthearted matters (adding the previous Jam-packed and The List stories too). Don’t think we only sat on our bums and talked nonsense though. Most of our time was spend practising eloquent English, juggling, yoga, at an orphanage, or reading (educational) literature.

I will ignore the relationship that Miwa suggested. But I do sure miss you as a travel buddy, Ben.

A.
